Barbara L. Legate practices in London at Legate & Associates.
She
obtained her L.L.B. at the University of Western Ontario in 1979 and
was called to the Bar in 1981. Her practice is restricted to
serious personal injury, wrongful death, disability, insurance and
medical negligence. Barbara is past president (1998-99) of the Ontario
Trial Lawyers Association, established and was Chair of its Insurance
Committee for 5 years, and has chaired its Rules and Legislation, Costs
and Conference Committees.
Barbara is a former director of the Advocates' Society and is an
active member of a variety of its committees including Insurance.
She maintains membership in the American Trial Lawyers' Association and
Middlesex Law Association. She is a former director of the
Ontario Neurotrauma Foundation. Her interest in brain injury
litigation has led her to be active with the Ontario Brain Injury
Association, and is its recipient of the 1999 Legal Fellowship Award. She is also recognized by The Best Lawyers of Canada as one of Canada's leading personal injury litigators.
Lectures have been presented to the Advocates' Society, the Ontario Trial Lawyers' Association, the Law Society of Upper Canada, The Canadian Trial Lawyers Association, Canadian Bar Association, The Canadian Institute, Insight, the Toronto Medical- Legal Society, the Ontario Occupational Therapists Association, The Canadian Association of Rehabilitation Personnel and the Association of Designated Assessment Centers, on matters relating to advocacy, evidence, insurance, medical negligence, practice and practice ethics, and tort law.
She lectured to students at the University of Western Ontario Law
School on Advocacy and as an adjunct faculty member. In London,
she is an active director of the Brain Injury Association of London and
Region, where she developed the "Bike Helmet Campaign" to provide bike
helmets to children in London schools, and chaired the Canadian
Paraplegic Association London Wheelchair Rally. Barbara is a
member of the Law Society's Specialists Committee. Currently she
is chair of the Parent Counsel of Central Secondary School. Ms.
Legate is certified as a specialist in civil litigation by the Law
Society of Upper Canada, and as a pretty good mom by her daughters, Amy
and Annie.
